Small wonder the sense of anticipation around this one has been particularly muted. Such omissions and scarcity of features is all collateral from EA's move from its older business model towards free, regular updates, though Battlefield 5 feels so incomplete at launch as it veers away from the dreaded season pass at times it feels more like an Early Access title. The co-op mode that was announced at launch isn't coming until later as, for that matter, is one of the four single-player War Stories, another planned piece of post-release support. The inevitable Battle Royale mode - surely the perfect fit for DICE's own brand of chaos - isn't out until next March. Availability: You might need a guide for that.Īnd even when that particular mess is behind us, Battlefield 5 isn't where you might expect it to be.Or maybe a bit over a week, if you're an EA Access Premier subscriber. Or, if you'd rather not pay for the whole thing, it's been out for a week for EA Access subscribers. Or it's out today, if you're willing to pay a little bit more. Here's a game that's not out for paying punters until later this month. It's the glitchiest, most technically troubled DICE's sandbox multiplayer has been since the infamous launch of Battlefield 4, and even the launch itself is all over the place. It introduces rare asymmetry to the game, so is worth checking out.A strong if slim shooter that lays down strong foundations for the future, while feeling a little unfinished.īattlefield 5 is a mess. It’s a problem engineers are still working on as a matter of high priority.īattlefield 5 got a new map last week, named Mercury - after the 1941 operation in Crete. “We've now made it so that if some cheeky beggar quits whilst downed, their loot will now drop,” producer Jaqub Ajmal adds, “rather than exit the server with them.”Ĭrashing should be less frequent in spectator mode, too - though DICE didn’t get to the general stuttering issues players have reported lately. And parachute draw distance has been improved, so you’ll be able to more accurately work out how many other players are dropping in your area. Over in Firestorm, DICE has fixed what they call the ‘Platform 9 and ¾’ issue - of players leaving the hangar early by glitching through the geometry. What’s more, the new Medic’s carbine, the Tromboncino, had its progress accidentally tied to that of the Commando Carbine, which was mucking up specialisations for certain players. Turns out it wasn’t working properly when used against tanks, which is something of a critical design flaw. The studio has made changes to a couple of weapons - namely the armour-piercing specialisation of the Boys AT, the formidable British anti-tank rifle. DICE is deploying a patch to tackle a few fixes that the last update missed. The downtime began at 8am UTC on PC, at 9am UTC on PS4, and will soon hit Xbox One at 10am UTC. But the interference will be worth it if you’re wanting to take down tanks, or prevent sneaky escapes in the game’s battle royale mode, Firestorm. You might have noticed Battlefield 5 has been briefly offline today.
